The words that haunted his thoughts left him too anxious to relax, so he jotted down a short apology letter and headed out. He slipped it under the door quietly and snuck away, hoping to avoid making eye contact with either woman until they’d had a chance to read his note.

He didn’t walk normally until he reached the house, but only because he could smell supper being cooked within. Another issue arose. He couldn’t keep Caedra’s presence a secret indefinitely, and it wasn’t fair to Mrs. Dobbs to have one of her rental rooms occupied without payment, so he drew in a long breath and headed inside.

Madalynn was at the stove, stirring a pot while staring out the window. He wished he could leave and not disturb her if she’d somehow managed to find some peace in her heart, but he had to fix the issue he had caused.

“Good afternoon, Mrs. Dobbs.”

“I wondered if that was you,” she sighed and put the lid on the pot. “You’re a bit early for supper. It won’t be ready for another hour.”

“I don’t believe I will be attending supper this evening.”

“Well, don’t expect me to keep putting covered plates on your bed. It may not seem like it, but I have other things to do besides catering to my guests.”

Kal nodded, swallowed hard, and braced himself for her reaction. “I need to tell you something.”

“Gods, please don’t tell me that you’re moving out.”

“No. Quite the opposite, actually.”

She lifted a brow at him. “You’re moving in? I’m not sure how to take that.”

“No,” he laughed with a nervous grin. Something about her made him lose half of his self-control. He didn’t know what it was about Madalynn that flustered him so heavily, but it was a problem that he welcomed compared to his other issues. “I have a friend who will be staying with us for an undisclosed amount of time. Well, that isn’t entirely accurate. She is already staying in…”

Do NOT say Davia’s old cottage!

“…the cottage adjacent to mine,” he offered while pulling a gold coin out of his coin sack. “This is to cover her rent, as well as all of her meals.”

She glared at the golden coin for a second with her green eyes narrowing more with each second that passed. “That is far too much rent unless she’s staying for over a year.”

“She doesn’t have a job, Mrs. Dobbs, so she will…”

“Madalynn.”

“Excuse me?”

“Madalynn,” she repeated with a weak smile. “I have grown to despise my last name for obvious reasons. However, until things are made official, I cannot go back to my previous surname. You may call me Madalynn, but don’t you dare think for one second that you can get away with calling me Maddy.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it, Madalynn. Now, as I was saying…”

“Too much,” she sighed and turned back to the stove. “I can’t accept that.”

“I’m afraid that I will have to insist. Caedra…”

“Caedra?” she repeated suspiciously. “That’s an eastern elf name.”

He thought about the location of Tel’Ase on the map and nodded.
